LifeSpan Legislative Day a Success
On Tuesday, February 3rd, LifeSpan members gathered to deliver their message to Maryland's legislative leadership at the association's annual Legislative Day. Using the same format as last year, over 100 providers and legislators 'speed-dated' one another at tables pre-arranged by topic and/or provider type for 15 minute sessions, and then asking legislators to move to the next table covering another issue.  >Read full story...
Joint Conference Announced for LifeSpan & HFAM
We are excited to announce that for the 1st time ever, LifeSpan and HFAM have agreed to join together in 2009 to host a joint annual conference! New Maryland Long Term Care Ombudsman Appointed
Secretary of Aging Gloria G. Lawlah announced recently the appointment of Ms. Deborah “Debbie” Sokolow as the new State Long Term Care Ombudsman. Since 1990, Ms. Sokolow has served as the District Ombudsman Manager with the Florida Department of Elder Affairs, where she has worked extensively with the program’s volunteer component and long-term care facility inspections. Prior to this, she worked as a reporter for several metropolitan newspapers in Florida, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.   
 
Ms. Sokolow received a Master of Public Health degree from the Florida International University in Miami, Florida and an A.B. degree in Journalism from Rider College in New Jersey.  In 2007, Ms. Sokolow received four certificates from the FEMA Emergency Management Institute.  She is currently working on a PH.D in Public Health from the Florida International University.    
 
The Long Term Care Ombudsman Program, established under the Older Americans Act and administered by the U.S. Administration on Aging, is as a resident-centered advocacy program established to assist residents of nursing homes and assisted living facilities in resolving complaints about care practices and services.  As the State Long Term Care Ombudsman, Ms. Sokolow will be responsible for the statewide programs that operate through a network of 19 Local Area Agencies on Aging. Debbie joined the Department on February 2, 2009.
