Jeff Metz Appointed to BENHA!
Jeff Metz, President & Administrator of Egle Nursing Home in Lonaconing (and LifeSpan nominee) was recently appointed to Maryland's Board of Examiners of Nursing Home Administrators. Jeff joins the board as LifeSpan's second representative, along with Christine Mour, Administrator of St. Elizabeth Rehabilitation and Nursing Center.
With these excellent leaders on the BENHA, we anticipate that positive changes will be made regarding the profession. Congratulations to Jeff!

LifeSpan Peer-to-Peer Mtg Features Barbara Newman on CMT Certification

Barbara Newman, the Director of Nursing Practice for the Board of Nursing addressed a full house of assisted living professionals at LifeSpan's peer-to-peer meeting held March 12th at Vantage House in Columbia. Barbara discussed steps to take to ensure CMT certification and recertification; more efficient processing; appropriate timeframes for certifications and recertifications; what to do when they are not processed within the expected timeframes. She also reviewed the “languishing case” status and took questions on concerns about on-going problems regarding CMT recertification. LifeSpan has a full calendar of peer-to-peer meetings set for 2010.
Upcoming gatherings include: Going smoke-free pain-free 3/16(housing); group purchasing opportunities for mid to smaller providers 4/8; legislative wrap up with Danna Kauffman 4/23; OHCQ overview with Nancy Grimm 5/21. Beacon Golf Tourney Set for May 17th, Part of Mini-Conference 5/17&5/18

O'Malley Budget Proposes Doubling of Provider Tax
LifeSpan and members continue to battle to exclude from Governor O'Malley's budget a doubling of the provider tax rate. LifeSpan views the strategy as short-sighted and penalizing to private pay residents. State budget officials see the tax as a way to help close an overall budget gap.
The Cumberland Times printed a story on the issue and reflected the association's concerns.

Chaulk Appointed Executive Director of Maryland Patient Safety Center
. Patrick Chaulk, MD, MPH, FACP has been appointed the Executive Director of the Maryland Patient Safety Center (MPSC), effective late March 2010. He replaces William Minogue, MD, FACP, who is retiring after leading the Maryland Patient Safety Center since its 2004 inception.
